Media Campaigner (Consultant)

Media Campaigners are at the core of the organization’s campaigning work, from steering research and development of global and national campaigns, to media advocacy, creating public awareness, offline actions and campaign deliveries.

This is an exciting position at the heart of one of the most innovative and promising public organizations in the world today. It offers a unique platform from which to develop and pursue large-scale social change efforts.

This position will focus on the overall media strategies of Avaaz campaigns, but can expect to work up on key Avaaz current campaigns such as anti-disinformation, climate or biodiversity campaigns. Experience in those fields is desired, but not required.

As a Campaigner with a spike in Media, you will be responsible for supporting the development and execution of innovative communication strategies to win campaigns and make Avaaz a household name. This role will report to a Campaign Director or Senior Campaigner.


  • Developing and implementing strong creative media and communications strategies for Avaaz campaigns.
  • Expanding Media relationships with journalists working on different topics such as disinformation, climate, biodiversity, gender equity, and in diverse European locations
  • Execution of high profile and highly targeted press coverage on key campaigns and for profile pieces.
  • Building press lists and drafting all sorts of media material such as press releases media statements, op-eds and talking points with strong messaging.
  • Monitoring the media to identify trends in issue coverage and spot reactive opportunities.
  • Helping spot brand risk and developing strong responses.


  • This is a challenging role that requires hard work, flexibility, good judgment, initiative and an ability to deliver results. The core competencies which any successful candidate will display are:
  • 3+ years experience in press relations either in PR / media liaison or journalism
  • Ability to develop and implement strong media strategies for campaign impact and brand growth
  • Digital media friendly
  • Professionalism, efficiency and results-oriented delivery on short timelines.
  • Ability to meet strict deadlines, work under pressure and travel at short notice - when the health situation allows it.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Passion and commitment to global justice, citizen empowerment and social change.
  • Strong teamwork skills, comfortable in a highly collaborative team culture and a hierarchical team structure.
  • Enthusiasm for a wide range of global issues, and a readiness to move swiftly between them, while being able to rapidly focus in on the details of each.
  • Strong strategic, creative, and innovative thinking, and campaign and media planning skills.
  • Experience with the issues of disinformation/misinformation is preferable, but not essential. Experience with other global campaigning issues like human rights, democracy etc is also preferable.

Fluency in English is a requirement. Fluency in other languages is desirable, especially French, Portuguese, German, Spanish and Arabic. We are looking for strong Media Campaigners in UK or EU/Africa time zones.

This position is remote and would ideally be based in European or African timezones. Avaaz is a virtual organization, with most of our work done over email, telephone and Skype. Our staff are based in cities all over the world and meet at team retreats twice per year. Avaaz covers office costs, either to establish a home office or to rent one, and we support staff to house themselves in local similar organisations when preferred.

Compensation and Benefits
Salary varies with location and experience, and is highly competitive with leading international nongovernmental organizations. Specific benefits also range with location, but all include 5 weeks paid vacation per year, 10 paid holidays, phone and home internet reimbursement, out-of-home office/co-working reimbursement, and professional development funds.
